Using Literature to Build Jewish Values in Your Children
Let's go "Beyond the Book" with Nine Spoons A Chanukah Story.
Ages 5-8
This story deals with the harsh realities of life during the Holocaust in a highly sensitive and gentle manner. In this real life drama, women and young children become Maccabees. Lambs become lions! They make a menorah out of spoons while in a camp during the Holocaust, and thus are able to renew the true message of Chanukah.
"delivering the hands of the mighty into the hands of the weak,
the many into the hands of the few,
the wicked into the hands of the righteous"
Many of our children are unaware of how Jews did fight the Nazis by joining the underground, becoming spies and decoding messages, thus actively resisting their enemies.
The message beyond the book for a child is that the number "ONE" is the most important and powerful number in the world. Even in the midst of the Holocaust, one child had the idea to celebrate Chanukah, the mitzvah of lights -that led her to collecting One spoon-which led to making One menorah-that culminates in the expression of One people, united.
Encourage your child to think of him or herself as the one who can begin to make a difference in the world. One single child, with one family's menorah, can add light into the world around us!
Help your child understand the concept of the little Jewish spark that resides deep inside every Jew…that must come out, even in times of travail.
