Elie Wiesel was born in the town of Sighet in Transylvania. As a teenager he was taken to Auschwitz concentration camp and then to Buchenwald. He is the author of more than 40 books. He has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States Congressional Gold Medal, the French Legion of Honor, and the Nobel Peace Prize. He is an Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities and University Professor at Boston University. He is a founding chairman of the US Holocaust Memorial Council. He lives in New York City.
