| Few great Torah sages of the past two hundred years have gained such total veneration in all circles of Orthodox Jewry as Rabbi Moshe Sofer of Frankfurt, the Chasam Sofer. Rabbi Moshe Sofer became, in the difficult years of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, an incredibly powerful spiritual leader. Brilliant intellect and supreme honesty made his writings classics, and his Torah interpretations and halachic rulings and responsa are revered and studied everywhere. Rabbi Moshe Sofer was a rare blend of a scholar and a man of action. He organized a strong educational system and set principles for the operation of a Torah-true community. On his initiative, his own community of Pressburg became a model for all Central Europe, where he encouraged every town, however small, to maintain a rabbi who was a true Torah scholar and who would actively conduct a yeshiva. He personified confidence in Torah beliefs and lifestyle, which inspired Jews to follow his leadership in fighting back against assimilation and reform. Lauded by Chassidic rebbes and misnagdim alike, he was the epitome of Torah leadership, always dignified and correct even to his enemies, always dedicated to educating and helping other Jews. His descendants form an outstanding dynasty to this day, who lead Torah institutions and congregations with distinction. |
