In the early 1230's, copies of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed were burned due to the denunciation of it to Christian authorities by Jews who opposed it. When his son Abraham heard this, he sent the opponents the following verses:
"How foolish are those who say they burned a delightful book, more precious than gold.
They are a consuming fire, how can fire consume them?
Understand you fools, you burners, who are vainglorious. All is not as it appears, they went up like Elijah to G-d, and as the angel in the flame."
Many rabbis criticized the synthesis of Torah wisdom with Greek knowledge. His son "considered it to be a divine duty to defend his father's works against the slanderers and liars who were responsible for the burning."
