Martin Buber was one of the 20th century s most important and passionate representatives of the human spirit. Social activist, teacher, and religious writer, Buber worked for peace and Jewish rights throughout his life as well as almost single-handedly transforming Hasidism into one of the great mystical movements of the world. Two of his most influential works, The Ten Rungs and The Way of Man, resonate to this day. As enlightening and redemptive as they were over 50 years ago, they are published here in a single volume for the first time.

The tales and aphorisms retold by Buber in The Ten Rungs are drawn from Hasidic lore, where the various ways in which individuals learn to perfect themselves are the rungs on the ladder leading a higher realm. Fanciful and sober by turn, these interpretations never swerve from their basic purpose: to arouse an awareness of the individual s condition and show the way to a life of truth and goodness.

The Way of Man is a masterwork of economy in which Buber relates and interprets six traditional Hasidic stories, that offer guidance and wisdom in any age. There is something, he suggests, that can only be found in one place. It is a great treasure, which may be called the fulfillment of existence. The place where this treasure can be found is the place on which one stands.

Owing much to the Hasidic emphasis on joyful worship-- There is no rung of being on which we cannot find the holiness of God everywhere and at all times --Buber s thoughts on spirituality continue to inspire students, philosophers, and thinkers around the world.
