The year is 1068. Salomon Ben Isaac (one day to be known as Rashi), returns home to Troyes, France, from his studies in Germany to take over the family winemaking business and embark on a path that will indelibly influence the Jewish world. The first scholar ever to write a Talmud commentary, Salomon secretly begins doing something his community would view with great apprehension: teaching Talmud to his daughters.

At the heart of this book is Joheved, the eldest of three girls, whose mind and spirit are awakened by learning. Dutiful and serious, she can hold her own discussing the intricacies of Talmudic logic or negotiating the price of this year's vintage. She knows the danger to her family and her father's academy if others were to find out that she studied Talmud. So she keeps her passion for learning and prayer hidden -- even from her betrothed, Meir ben Samuel. This deception continues until the young couple encounters their first crisis -- and Joheved faces the choice between her marital happiness and what she has come to value as her true self.
