Chestnuts of Yesteryear is a saga, embracing five generations on Mother's side and five on the side of Father. The plot (as seen through the eyes of a young boy) extends from the Ukraine and Poland to Vienna, the United States and Israel, and deals with the central problems that preoccupied the Jewish People and the individual Jew on the threshold of modern times: the World of Torah and Hasidism in contrast to the Enlightenment and assimilation; mass emigration to America versus the early pioneers heading for Palestine; the dawn of Herzlian Zionism; relations between Jews and Gentiles - all this, while referring to the great changes that shaped the face of Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. The events, dates, names of localities and personages in the book are fully authentic; yet, after all, it is a novel and plainly remains in the realm of literature.
