The Yom Kippur War is raging and Lieut. Yoel Cohen, a gravely wounded tank officer lies in a field hospital, his life ebbing away. As he struggles to live, generations of his ancestors flash through his mind, a panorama of fictional events that trace the history of Tzefat.

Pinchas and his pet lion save the life of the future Roman General Savius. They become friends but are seperated until years later when Tzefat faces destruction.
Guido the Demon Boy and Dominique the Monk are captured by pirates and are forced to join the contest for plunder. They take sharply different paths, but are reunited in Tzefat.
Chana Leah's paintings win the admiration of Ibrahim Muttala and Jemail Ibn-Basha, who want to take her to Istanbul and fame. Then disaster hits Tzefat.

Exciting experiences continue to march through Yoel Cohen's delirium and on the way he discovers his Torah heritage that survived Tzefat's history of siege, earthquake, privation, and triumph.
