The Cat Who Escaped from Steerage

For nine-year-old Chanah and her family, the two-week voyage to America has been filled both with hope and with hardship. These Polish immigrants are packed together with hundreds of others in the steerage section of the ship, without fresh air or running water. Adding to the difficulties is the family's fear that Chanah's cousing Yaacov, who can neither hear nor speak, will be turned back at Ellis Island and not permitted to enter the United States.
Chanah has still another anxiety: Pitsel is missing. The cat Chanah rescued in Marseilles and smuggled aboard with out her parents' permission has escaped from her basket. Chanah and Yaacov make a desperate search for Pitsel, a search that takes them far beyond the bounds of steerage.
