"My mother threw me from the train." A Jewish woman in Germany today related to the author how, as an infant, she survived the Holocaust after she was thrown from a train on its way to the death camps in 1944 and was taken in and raised by a village woman. This simple and short story is greatly enhanced by the detailed illustrations of Roberto Innocenti. The masterful use of color, and the lack thereof, increases the emotional impact.
