Hanukkah in Hebrew means "dedication," and the holiday celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar. We celebrate
with games, small gifts, eating of traditional foods (especially the deep oil fried jelly doughnuts to remind us about the oil miracle) and ritual daily lighting of a menorah. The holiday is also known as the "Festival of Lights."
