Printing The Talmud is both a scholars and a bibliophile's delight. This bibliographic study of the Talmud and it's evolution through written and printed editions gives the scholar increased insight into the work. The bibliophile is given freshly researched material by Heller discussing not only the classic Italian editions, but those published in Eastern Europe as well.

For the rest of us these pages offer an appreciation of the publication of significant editions of the Talmud. The 97 photographic plates allow us to recognize many of these editions on sight. The history of the various publishing houses their rivalries, and personalities make for an interesting read. When hemmed in by antisemetic laws and edicts, we see not only the type was movable, but the entire publishing house.

Though the enterprise of printing and distributing the Talmud was fraught with trouble, the results were magnificent. Witness the Soncino Edition, the Vilna, Salonica Lublin and Cracow editions of the Talmud: the greatest Jewels of the Jewish World.
