 The candle is also lit on prescribed Jewish holidays and on the anniversary of the passing.  There are also 7 day yahzheit candles which are burned perpetually during the first year of the passing.  These are called shiva candles.  There are metal or glass yahrzeit holders which are designed to hold the candles in a very dignified manner.
