Hand-washing before eating bread (at any meal) is a known as Netilat Yadayim ( "washing of the hands). Its traditional purpose is primarily hygienic, but a spiritual aspect can also be assigned to its practice. Jewish washing cups are constructed with two handles - so that water need not
come in contact with the hand not yet washed. Handwashing is performed upon awaking following the recitation of Modeh Ani: "I gratefully thank You, O living and eternal King, for you have returned my soul within me with compassion ..."
