A novel approach to the culture and heritage of the Jews of Spain. One of the most important fields of Jewish activity in Spain was religious architecture: the building of synagogues. The architects and builders alkike were Jews. Thousands of synagogues existed in Spain at the time. Some were magnificent and large, while others served communities and families. The architecture of the synagogues in Spain, with the same Jewish heritage as its background, was a vital component in the history of Jewish architecture. They brought the flavor of the synagogue architecture that they had known in Spain to the places of their dispersion.
These and other subjects are dealt with in this book, the result of years of architectural research, by the author, of synagogues in Spain itself and in the lands of its cultural heritage. There are also in depth studies of three Spanish synagogues: the Ezra ha-Sofer Synagogue in Fostat, Egypt, the Nahmanides (Ramban) Synagogue in Jerusalem, and the Ohel Yaakov Synagogue in Aley, Lebanon. Included are drawings, and photographs by the author.
