The stories told of Chelm are old Jewish folklore tales. They originated in Eastern Europe in Yiddish, but have been told for generations, in many countries and in various languages. Although there is an actual place called Chelm, these stories are not about that place. Instead, thes stories are about everyplace. They are about a people, about an innocence, about a never-ending optimism and hope that have a universal quality. Most of all, these stories are about laughter.
Many cultures have a place like Chelm known for its foolishness. But the fools of these stories are aptly named Wise Men, for despite the foolishness of Chelm wisdom, the people in these stories never suffer from it, and that is true wisdom. (From the Introduction.)
